"Vintage Cloche Hat"

with Cari Cook

Did you love the vintage cloche hats worn on “Downton Abbey”? Or do you just love the style of a cloche hat? This hat is so cute and can be worn by anyone. We will learn how to lay out the wool and once the hat is finished, we will shape the hat. Next comes embellishing it with ribbons, flowers, ostrich, or peacock feathers. Do you have a vintage pin that belonged to your grandmother? Bring that along. I will bring several colors of wool for you to choose from to make your hat. Come prepared to have some fun.

This class is suitable for teens and adults. Bring a friend or have a mother and daughter day out. Your kit fee of $12 (payable the day of the class directly to the teacher) will include all the supplies you need.

Cari Cook’s work as a fabric artist began 12 years ago and continues to evolve as she pushes the boundaries of what she can do with wool. She combines the softest of wools and miscellaneous fibers with her own hand-dyed silk to create hats, bracelets, vests, jackets, shawls, and bags. Her designs reflect her love of horses, the beauty of nature and impressionistic art. Cari and her husband reside on a small farm in Longmont, CO, and she’s not in her studio, you can find her on her horse or working in the garden. Her website is: www.thequiltedhorse.net

"Plein Air Painting in Layers"

with Marie Massey

Experience painting along the beautiful Cache La Poudre River, one of the only remaining “Wild and Scenic” rivers in the Continental United States. This majestic river runs through red rock and granite canyons, and meadows into ponds in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. You will learn the plein air “painting in layers” method. It is all about value and color. First you will learn how to quickly build a composition with depth and values in acrylic, then apply the final layers in oil, to bring in relevant detail, subtle light effects and color to create sparkling paintings. Personal style and expression are encouraged. The painting in layers method will enable you to get beyond the minutia and put down on canvas your impressions of the visual landscape. There will be individual instruction at your easel, demos, lectures, and critiques.

Award-winning artist, Marie Massey, has been painting professionally for 24 years and teaching the "Painting in Layers" method to adults working in oil and acrylic for 12 years. Marie is an avid plein air painter and does 5 to 7 plein air painting events annually. Marie's paintings have been juried into more than 130 national and regional shows where they have won many awards.

This class is offered privately, outside ACEP.  Click here to send Marie an email: mm@mariemassey.com Mention the "Art Center of Estes Park" in your email text and receive $25 off your registration price: $125 - $25 ACEP Discount = $100.

In this class, take one scene from landscape or a structure you like. Paint it in three different styles of painting, realistic, impressionistic, and abstract. Create a triptych, maybe your house or a familiar spot in your yard you love. Take some photos as the year progresses. Start by using two values and expanding to three values. Why does color confuse value?

In this class you will bring any thought you use for composition to share. We will start with a colored background called a “mingling” - using two cool colors and one warm color, and one with two warm colors and one cool. I will bring some organic shapes to develop the composition. Tree branches dried flowers, dried weeds. Keep your eyes open and bring your own if you wish. What is creativity?
