The Art Center of Estes Park was established in 1987 and offers an extensive collection of fine art including painting, photography, jewelry, ceramics, glass, fiber, and woodworking. In addition, we present opportunities for education in the visual arts, and act as an advocate and partner for community arts development.
This was the vision of several local artists, many of whom are still participating members. We are dedicated to education and excellence in the visual arts, and is operated through artist and community volunteers, membership, sales, and donations. Our mission is to provide a facility that supports and promotes regional artists; to present opportunities for education in the visual arts, and to act as an advocate and partner for community arts development.
The Center now represents local and regional artists from across the Rocky Mountain area. We feature the high-quality artwork of 40 local Colorado artists in a broad selection of media. Whether you’re searching for a large piece of fine art or photography to enhance your home, or the perfect gift of jewelry, fiber, pottery, or a notecard for a friend, we have it.
We feature a new exhibit approximately every six weeks, opened by a public reception featuring refreshments and entertainment. We invite you to come and view these fine artists' work and to shop for additions to your home or business collections.
My interest in photography started at the age of eight years when my grandmother gave me my first camera. At twelve years old, I started developing my own photos. I am totally self-taught. My photography education came from reading art books and magazines and looking at art displayed in art galleries and special displays as well as photo conferences and online tutorials.
I currently have some of my work at a gallery called Doug’s Hang Up in Greeley, Colorado. I have also exhibited some of my work at Latitude Art Gallery in Rockport, Texas, and I have also received awards for my artwork from Grassland Inspirations and Art from the Heart. Prior to retiring, I attended and graduated in 1974 from the University of Denver School of Law, and I practiced law for 44 years in Greeley, Colorado. I am also a Vietnam War veteran, serving in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant in an F-4 Phantom squadron in air intelligence and substituted as an R10 in an F-4 airplane. I was based at Virginia Beach, Virginia.
I am originally from New Jersey but when I was sent to Buckley Air Force Base for six months of training, I came to love Colorado, so when my military duty was over, I moved to Colorado and have been living here for 44 years. I was Chairman of the Weld County Republican Party for three years. I participated in Ride the Rockies bike ride four times. I am an avid hiker and have climbed a number of fourteeners, including Long’s Peak twice.
My style of photography is what I call “Creative Art Photography.” Rather than having a simple image consisting of one item, such as a landscape, I combine multiple photographs to include a person, child, animal, or other object to create a single image. Many times, I will also alter colors. My purpose is to bring into being a final image that will have appropriate balance and color to generate a mood or feeling in the viewer. This process may take a week or two to create the final image, much like a painter who creates a work of art.
